Reveneering Cabinet Doors, Reveneering cabinet doors with peel and stick veneer, How To Mitigatte Blotchiness by Reveneering Cabinet Doors,

Posted by

Q. I have several veneered cabinet doors that need to be refinished or reveneered. The doors have areas that are “blotchy”.Can I re stain or refinish the doors to make them look more uniform (not blotchy)? I’m sending several photos of my veneered doors for you to check out.

A.  Your cabinet doors are showing unusually bold, dramatic differences in how the surface took the stain and finish. I don't think that you can mitigate this unless you reveneer your doors.

Your best bet is to reveneer your cabinet doors with a psa paper backed veneer.

The blotchiness on your doors could be caused by improper application of the finish or stain, inborn characteristics of the wood veneer, or possibly sunlight.

Sometimes a wooden surface will not absorb the stain evenly over the entire surface. This is usually due either to the innate wood grain of the veneer itself, or by the naturally occurring difference in how the individual book matched veneer components may take stain or finish differently.

I suggest that you reveneer your cabinet doors with a paper backed peel and stick psa veneer.  Be aware that you may still see some variances within a given veneer sheet for how the veneer takes the stain or finish. This is a naturally occurring effect of mother nature.
